[1] Session was corrupted if car's Bluetooth handsfree was enabled. (aol: I've seen the same on 2002 M3 as well, the car's bluetooth needed to be disabled, otherwise the session would be corrupted, even with only GPS, no OBD).

[2]Had GPS distortion probably due to placement below rear window near engine electronics, OBD was fine.

Motorbikes and OBD-reader combinations that RaceChrono OBD-II feature works on:
    [li]Triumph Daytona 675 (v1.10 and OBDKey)

Combinations that does not work:
[li]2005 Lotus Elise (RC v1.30, Nokia E62, Qstarz BT-818X, OBDKey) PROBLEM: after plugging in the obdkey, car went in to antitheft mode and would not start. Driver had to open key fob and reset it and car started again. Then EXACTLY at the same time as starting RC, a series of beeps were heard..also related to alarm. We left car running and did run successfully but the obdkey with RC does strange things with this car.

Readers:
    [li]OBDKey Bluetooth from
http://www.obdkey.com/ works fine.
[li]Car-Pal Bluetooth works fine, with the exception it being more expensive and slower than OBDKey.
[li]Alpha-Bid's Bluetooth OBD-II reader works fine with v1.02 beta or later, but is as slow as Car-Pal.

List of potential issues with OBD-II readers:
[li]The OBDKey has following limitation when used with 2008 Jetta, and probably some other vehicles: The reader does not resume operation after engine is stopped (or if a session is started before starting the engine). Workaround is to momentarily remove the reader from the OBD-port.

[li]RaceChrono v1.00 graph viewer hangs when RPM goes over 8000rpm. Fixed in v1.01 beta and later.
[li]OBD timestamp issues with RaceChrono v1.00 and earlier. Fixed in v1.01 beta and later.

Please continue the list by replying!

PS. I would be very greatful for anybody who sends their NMEA log files to me (*-nmea.txt under \RaceChrono\Sessions), recorded using the v0.96 and an OBD-II reader, to tracks(at)racechrono.com.

PPS. Sessions with all OBD-II channels turned on are especially appreciated!

  • Hi,
    i own a VW golf mk5 R32 year 2007 and a nokia N95.
    may i use ODB-II channels?
and if yes which way and what i need?
  • edited August 2008
Buy the OBDkey Bluetooth from http://www.obdkey.com/, it works all right. The R32 should be electrically similar to the Jetta which works all right. See the #1 problem on the problems list, which I've just added.
  • Just a doubt that I think may be of common interest.
I use Nokia N95 with racechrono and a GPS external bluetooth antenna nokia NDW3. They works very well togheter. Now I want to have also OBD-II data on racechrono. I'm thinking to buy a OBD-II bleutooth connector. Does nokia N95 will play racechrono and work with 2 bluetooth device (antenna & ODB connector) at the same time properly ???
I've a doubt on this fact. I do not want to use internal GPS antenna of my N95 because it is less sensitive than external one (near to the main window)

Two Bluetooth devices work just fine on my E61, N95 and N78 phones. I've seen some problems with Bluetooth HF devices together with GPS and/or OBD-II readers, so you may want to disable such if you run in to problems. The standard allows 7 devices, but I doubt that many devices will work efficiently enough :)

    R-power and aol,

I have logged a set of a data on my Mazda RX-8 and sent it to Antti. I used N95 with Qstarz BT-818 Extreme and OBD key. I never miss anything. Sometimes I have to reinsert the OBDkey and resume the session, make sure both signal are active on live screen, before I do my laps.
  • edited August 2008
Takahashi: Does it give you any error like "No connection to OBD-II" or "No data from OBD-II"? Or does it give "No data" for your channels? Is it random or only after turning down power?
  • edited August 2008
The screen gave "No connection to OBD-II", I am pretty sure. Because my immediate reaction is always to unplug the OBDkey, pause the session, replug the OBDkey and resume the session. Then the BT of the phone will pick up the OBDkey. And it is always at the start of the run when I plugged the OBDkey before, sometimes before the turn of the key. Sometimes I turn the power off and restart the car and the OBD logging may or may not continue. I have not work out exactly the pattern yet.

I will try to run the unit when the car is stone cold first. Maybe also trying with another car and see the difference.
  • Ok I have ran the car on a race track condition with OBD key. Yes the OBD function stopped connecting and showed "No OBD data" when the car was stopped for the session (for a break) and had to replug to the OBDkey before resuming the session. GPS also went to sleep mode at the same time and need to turn back on again. That is no drama at all.

I had RPM and throttle position logged only.

However, the problem is that there is a lag of the logging from the OBD data compare with the GPS, so the throttle/rpm changes do not sync with the GPS speed. It is about less than a sec delay or something. It may be inherited in the OBD data transfer to the phone. I am not sure but aol you are very smart and you can probably figure it out.

I am emailing the log files to you in the mean time. They are embrassingly slow laps btw ;).
  • edited September 2008
Thanks Takahashi for the log file! Seems like the graph viewer on v1.00 hangs when your RPM goes over 8195 ... Fixed it for the next version.

Seems like your GPS receiver "lags", it is about 0.7 - 0.8 seconds behind the OBD-II data. Which brand and model is it?

One favor to ask though; next time you go to track, could you include OBD-speed in addition to the RPM and Throttle Position? Then I could use that file when developing the automatic sync feature. It is a bit harder to sync OBD RPM with GPS speed. I have made a couple such sessions my self, but it would be nice to test with such big time difference.
  • edited September 2008
GPS lags? You sure? It is the Qstarz BT818 extreme setted at 5Hz.

    Screenshot0044.jpg

Looking at the graph it seems like the RPM follows the GPS speed

Will log OBD speed next time - end of this month.
  • edited September 2008
I just looked at the first lap, where the GPS is lagging a bit. Later laps are as you described.

Seems like the system clock was changed 2 seconds forwards (operator clock sync?), which caused the OBD-II data to go out-of-sync to different direction than at start of the session. Clearly a bug, system clock should not affect OBD-II timestamps... You've revealed two bugs same day, not too bad1 :-)

I will make a new beta version soon, so you can have a fixed version for your next track day!

"The reader does not resume operation after engine is stopped (or if a session is started before starting the engine). Workaround is to momentarily remove the reader from the OBD-port."

    Hi
Do you know if the problem is that the Bluetooth communications have been interrupted, or that the ECU communications have been interrupted?

If the Bluetooth communications have been lost, then closing the socket / port and re-opening it should fix it?

If ECU communications have been lost, then ATZ followed by any request (e.g. 0100) would fix that.

Let me know if I can help further.

Hi Sinclair, the reader did not get any channels even after reconnecting, got NO DATA from 0100 even after ATZ. I've seen this problem in 2008 VW Jetta TDI 1.9. Only removing the reader fixed the problem.
  • Hi aol
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to recreate this. Would you know which protocol is in use on the 2008 VW Jetta TDI 1.9? Is it CAN 11 bit / 500 ?
If you send ATDP then you will get the protocol string back from OBDKey...

  • Sorry, the car is not too often available to me. But I guess the system is same as in all Golf V based cars.

Notice for everybody using OBD-II: The v1.01 beta is available at the news sections of the site. Includes many OBD-II related fixes.
  • Hi all, OBDkey BT bought and Arrived. Plugged into the VW golf R32 2007 and tuned with racechrono settings (with pairing) it works (with last 1.01 racechrono) for 3 seconds, then freeze. I've selected RPM and throttle %.
When I unplug and then plug again OBD it works for 3 seconds than freeze again.
    Any suggestion?
To try older racechrono version or there is some firmware upgrade for OBDkey?
    thanks

The v1.01 beta is broken, I'm very sorry about this. Try 1.02 beta, it should work.
  • Hi Ivo,
    did you try the 1.02?
Let us know if all is OK again!

  • Hi obdkey, please can you tell me if the OBDkey would work on a bike with a Power Commander ? Thanks J
  • Hi J
OBDKey works with the OBD-II standard protocols.
This covers all petrol vehicles since 2001 and all diesel vehicles since 2004. For the USA vehicles since 1996 are OBD-II compliant.
If the bike is OBD-II compliant it will be OK.
Does the bike have the OBD-II connector?
    Sinclair
  • edited September 2008
Many European cars before 2001 are OBD-II compliant as well, even though it was compulsory yet.

    hi All
1st i would like to say thanks for this piece of software! it is really nice!! just to understand i buy my first mobile (in 8 years) lest week just to be able to use it!!

now question about the OBD-II, i have this product already http://www.obdscan.net/ for my rx8, i'm not really an expert on this king of issue and i'd like to understand if it's possible to use it in conjunction with ma nokia 6110 in order to have al the data that i can monitor at the moment on my laptop

    thanks a lot in advance
    regards
    dario
  • No Dario

Obdscan from Harrison runs in serial bus and not bluetooth right? So it won't work.
  • hi Takahashi

thanks for the answare, you are right it works on resial and is connected to laptop via USB, is the problem solvable via usb-bluetooth adapter (in someway, i really nont sure of what im talking about...i'm better with suspensione ihihihih)

    thanks again
    dario
  • I am not 100% computer geek, but I thought the USB head of the OBD-USB line of your OBDscan and the USB head of any USB-bluetooth adaptor is the same???

Male to Male? Something like that?
  • Some of the RS232-OBD2-adapters can probably be used with RaceChrono by using RS232<=>Bluetooth adapter. I haven't heard anyone doing that though.

These standard USB-Bluetooth dongles will not work, not so sure if there is right product available. Easiest probably to just buy a new OBD-II reader with Bluetooth.
  • thanks a lot fot the info
  • edited October 2008
    you can add

    '03 to '08 Mazda Rx8 (v1.02 and OBDKey)

    no problem to report
  • My 2003 VW GTI is now fully functional with the Alpha Bid Bluetooth adapter and Beta 1.02
